Turmeric, a spice commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking, has long been used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties. The active ingredient in turmeric that is responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects is called curcumin. Curcumin is a polyphenol, a type of antioxidant that is known for its ability to reduce inflammation in the body.
-
Curcumin works by inhibiting the activity of various inflammatory enzymes and molecules, such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). These enzymes and molecules are involved in the production of inflammatory compounds called prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which contribute to the development of various inflammatory conditions. By inhibiting their activity, curcumin can reduce the levels of these inflammatory compounds and thus reduce inflammation in the body.
-
Curcumin also has been shown to have antioxidant properties which also play a role in reducing inflammation. It can neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to inflammation.
